RespiraWorks team

We are leveraging a global pool of world-class engineers and professionals in our efforts, and we want your help!

Whatever your background, there's a place for you on our team. We are looking for a diverse array of skills, including technical writing, engineering, regulatory, PR, and more. Contact us at [email protected] if you would like to volunteer. Together, we can make a real-world impact during this pandemic.

We can offer you training, guidance and mentorship with any area you lack experience with. You will be interacting with a very open multidisciplinary team will have opportunities to gain considerable knowledge in parallel fields and broaden your knowledge and versatility. You are never never in a “silo” and no information is strategically withheld from you, and you are free to migrate between different roles that you feel interested in. That being said, we will do our best to guide you to maximize your contribution to our project.

Our project being “open source” means that all your contributions will be recorded and in the public record. They will be improved upon by others. When you work on a project like ours, you know that the fruits of all your labor will be available and accessible to future generations of humanity around the globe and someday possibly beyond.

Below are some of the roles we are actively seeking. This is not an all-inclusive list. If you have skills you think would be useful that are not listed here, do not hesitate to reach out.

Continuous testing infrastructure engineer

You will be developing and maintaining infrastructure for continuous testing and integration of software and hardware subsystems for a medical ventilator. This will include configuring cloud-based software testing services as well as bespoke servers interfacing with multiple prototype devices in a physical environment. Your work can be completely remote.

You should have experience with Linux system administration and some familiarity or at least willingness to learn some of the following:

Fundraising Development Lead

We're looking for someone to supervise and coordinate our fundraising activities, including grants, merchandise sales, and other opportunities. You'll work closely with an internal team, as well as external clients, donors, and various members of the community. Our experienced global team of engineers needs your fundraising experience!

Mechanical engineer

You will work on the CAD design of mechanical components, such as assembly of the ventilator, enclosure, and specific components such as fittings for pneumatics, and manifolds. You will also keep an eye on configuration management, and ensure mechanical systems integrate.

Web application developer

You will be developing an online platform for storing, browsing and analyzing test data from medical device prototypes. Users will log in and register prototype devices and test equipment, fill out information on their physical configuration. Authenticated devices will upload test data which will then be searchable and comparable in various ways via a web interface.

You should have experience with (or willingness to learn):

Documentation system developer (software)

You will be developing a flexible system for the generation of manufacturing documentation for a medical device. The system will process exported tabular data (in XML or CSV), integrating it with manually composed technical documentation and other bodies of metadata. The output will be a browsable and cross-linked set of pages that will fully explain how and from what parts a medical ventilator can be assembled.

You should have experience with (or willingness to learn):

Machinist / tinkerer (Oakland, CA)

You will help test-manufacture medical ventilators and improve the manufacturing design. You will also help manage parts inventory and order additional parts when needed. The manufacturing process is not fast-paced or urgent but requires care, diligence and reflection. You should be able to take notes and think of ways to improve the process.

You should be close to Oakland, CA or be able to regularly visit our industrial facility there. No prior experience is required, only interest and willingness to help. Experience with resin 3d printing would be a plus.

We can offer you training in mechanical and manufacturing design, as well as training on various machinery available to you in our manufacturing co-op that we share our roof with.

C++ Software Developer

You will implement crucial software components for a medical ventilator. You will be involved in a variety of tasks - from adding logic that controls sensors to higher-level logic that displays and interacts with alarms. You will develop testable and maintainable architecture, working with requirements to ensure we meet regulatory and broader user requirements. Experience with any one of the requirements labeled “preferred” below would be helpful but not strictly necessary.
